I SURVIVED
HOWEY
ACADEMY
AN UNOFFICIAL WEBSITE BY MONA LISA ABBOTT

Photo from around 1959 or 1960 Howey Yearbook scan from John C. Campbell
Personally, I (formerly known as Lisa Price aka Kitty
Price) had a somewhat unusual experience, I was in the ninth grade
about 1964/1965, and it
was my first time boarding away from home... The Housemother selected
me to be placed in an
"experimental compound" room as I recall them naming it, and there I
had 5 roommates, Marta Hall (later her married name was Marta Hall Martinez I believe), Shirley Smith, Heidi
(Glasson?), Sam(antha? forgot her last name), and Diana (forgot her last name too). My memories are fading here, sorry friends,
if I can't remember your last names today, maybe it will come back to
me tomorrow... We had a little study room in the front and our sets of
bunk
beds, and two showers and lavatories with a storage shelf above the
johns. I'll never forget hiding out in that storage place there the
night of my first mandatory attendance dance. I had a lovely silver
dress and an ostrich feather wrap, and pretty silver shoes but was too
afraid to go, til it was almost over, when I got the
nerve and came down from the storage shelf, and went. I hope to add
more of my experiences as time goes on, and its always inspirational to
me, when I hear from others about their Howey Academy memories. Please
write if you knew me then, or if you'd like to express any memories
here on my personal website I created for us...
this site is under construction, created on October 21,
2002 by Mona Lisa Abbott,
aka Kitty Price or Lisa Price (maiden name). Please send your memories, stories,
and photos so I can put them on this site if you like.
Dear Sam,
Sorry it took so long for me to answer your email. I have misplaced my Howey
Yearbook and was looking to find your picture. Anyway, I'd sure like to create
a Howey Website. Do you know of any Howey Sites? Do you have any photos for
such a project?

Hey John C. Campbell,
No, I'm not sure what exactly caused it to close, but I was told the
facility was taken over as a home for wayward girls or something like
that, and I heard the gynmasium was used as an expendable prop and
blown up for a movie stunt - probably in the 70s, it would be nice to
know what movie that was, and to see it.
So tell me about your memories... I'd love to hear them... and maybe post them on Howey site if you don't mind...

Not a bit The headmaster sticks in my mind and riding through the orange
groves on horseback. (last school I ever went to that had equestrian
classes)
The last year I was there ... was when hurricane Dora (wierd
one ... actually had two eyes) when smack through the town ... I'll dig
up my yearbook if you like and scan some of the shots in it. I've got
one on the computer now so I'll tag it on the bottom of this.

I left there, went over to public school on Merritt Island (while my
parents were still together the old man was at the Cape.) and then ended
up back up here in Annapolis for a few years (Wroxeter-on-the-Severn,
then Severn School) and then when my mother died ... I ended up back in
public school - snicker - at (of all things) Parris Island (Beaufort,
SC) to graduate, and then back up to Annapolis to go to U. Maryland.
Your husband did the website? Darn nice job. I piddle around with
photography but mostly I do carvings (engravings) in wood (Alice through
the looking Glass, Lord of the Rings, etc.) ... and my best girl friend
(my wife) helps me raise my English cider apples. Two acres of esoteric
trees and such. I've been a contractor for the Intel Community for a
long time (NSA) mostly but ... heart attack 8 years ago, and some
lingering unresolved issues that John's Hopkin's can't figure out so I'm
semi retired.

Remembering Graduation:
Well, my eldest (a son) is graduating tomorrow...I am
afraid he just simply does not have the memories that
come from being a Howeyite - poor kid!!! He's a real
good kid...hmmmm.
...maybe the mailman.......
Enough about him...now me! Well, for several days
before graduation a few of us were on a very long
trip...no, we did not leave the campus! Then around
the end of that, I got real sick with a fever of
105-106 degrees...don't know what I had but with the
after trip effect and the fever, I didn't have much
grasp of what was going on. We had a school play
somewhere around those last days. I was in a huge
bear(?) suit and was literally burning up and sweating
buckets. I either forgot my couple of lines or someone
else did and I was waiting for that person. I think
that play must have been pretty dog-gone bad (I have
no clue what it was or what it was about or why I was
in an animal suit (any 73'ers have a clue?). I vaguely
remember hearing some weak applause from the families
of the students who were there.
Then, while I was in bed with the fever, someone came
and made me go to the student center because I had won
something in the art show. I had a first place for
some line drawings I did in a class (not classwork!)
and a ribbon of some nature for some hippie leather
boots I had made (for a class). I think I won best in
show because of those two things. I also think all the
art students were pissed because I was not in the art
classes. Anyway, they took photos of me and my
ribbons. I was turning all sorts of red colors because
of the fever and was really out to lunch. Some folks
thought it was wonderful how I was embarrassed,
turning red, and could not find the words to describe
how I felt about the awards. Hell, I was trying not to
pass out and was trying to figure out what the H was
going on.
Next, was the real graduation. I walked up on the
stage in the gym, got my diploma and then almost
missed the steps walking off the stage, which got some
hoots and hollars from everyone. Once again, I was
still running with the 105 fever and don't remember
anything particularly else.
I remember afterwords meeting my girlfriends family
(JO) with my folks and something seemed real
strange...maybe it was the fever. Also, since I was
sick, my folks would not let me stay for the party
that night. We left within minutes after the
graduation. Didn't really get to say the proper
goodbyes to my Howey family. 'Course I was so brain
sick I don't know what I would have said anyway. They
took me home and I almost died of pneumonia several
days later.
So, how's that? Someone mentioned how Howey was home
and home was a place to visit on weekends and holidays
and how they looked forward to getting back to the
Howey family. Count me in on that. Such a strange
place to call home - it was the people that made it
that way. We all had our stories of why we were there
and we bonded together in our fate. (yeah, alot of
that is mushy crap...the place itself sucked, but some
of the people kept others of the people going!!).
So, all you Howey grads and almost Howey grads, here's
to you for being a special family that has endured
over all these years. WE are HOWEY!!
Like I said at the beginning, my son will never have
the memories we had!!

Hi Everyone,
Once again, I'm late :) The old science building that I posted in the
Howey pics was directly south of the Chapel, across from the girls
dorm. I had Miss Engleman for a science teacher there in 7th grade, 73-
74. This must have been the year the infirmary was moved into the girls
dorm, because I never went to the "house". The house was used by one of
the administrators all 3 years I was at Howey. This was also the first
year that they relaxed the dress code and "hair" cut rules. Still had
to wear collared shirts and no jeans to class..and if you had one of
the "old school" teachers monitoring the cafeteria, you couldn't get in
there with jeans either. I will dig through my pics again and see if I
can find any more of the buildings, nice to see people here again...
